Postal Stamps from different countries of the world come with beautiful themes and images. Each postal stamps tells a story. Some commemorate a leader, other stamps celebrate the founding of an institution such as a school or college while others celebrate a nation’s wildlife. Collecting stamps and learning about the theme they are based on gives a great deal of knowledge about people, historical incidents, places. etc

The term philately is derived from two Greek words philos, meaning love and atelia, which means without tax, an apparent reference to the stamp which enabled a letter or a parcel to be sent to an address a great distance away without being levied en route. Today philatelists are found throughout the world coming from diverse occupations such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, policemen and many students

A brief history of Stamps

The idea of stamps was first conceived by Rowland Hill, who suggested stamps as part of his proposal to reform the British Postal System. The first stamp was released in 1840. Nicknamed the Penny Black, it contained an elegant engraving of the then reigning British Monarch, Queen Victoria. The introduction of stamps simplified the postal system and made sending and receiving letters much easier and simpler.

Following Britain, other countries too released their own stamps. Today, almost all countries issue their own postage stamps with the name of the country and the monetary denomination printed in the stamp. Incidentally, stamps from Great Britain do not mention the name of the country.

Starting your Hobby
Philately as a hobby is relatively inexpensive to start. You can begin with collecting used stamps from mail you receive from friends. You can also ask your friends and relatives for stamps they receive. Besides, you can also buy stamps from dealers. This is a faster way to develop a collection. It is good if you share your interest in stamps with your friends. It helps you to exchange stamps with them, helping your collection to be more diverse.

Setting up your collection
Most Philatelists maintain their collection in stamp albums. You can either use hinge based albums where stamps are attached to the pages of the albums by means of special adhesive hinges. Alternatively, strip albums with special slots where the stamps can be inserted are also available. It is good to handle stamps with special tweezers to avoid damaging the delicate edges during handling.

Stamp collections can be thematic i.e. based on a particular theme such as sports, railways, birds and so on. You can also have collections based on countries.

Mint Stamps and First Day Covers
Mint stamps are stamps which are purchased from the Postal Department through the the local post office or an official philatelic agency. These stamps are fresh unlike used stamps in the collection.

First Day Covers are issued by the Post office on the day of the stamps release. To increase visual appeal a special cancellation or logo is applied on the envelope.

Philatelic societies and bureaux
Joining a philatelic society is a great way of developing your hobby. Philatelic societies provide numerous resources for the stamp collector such as a stamp catalogues, newletters, information on upcoming stamp releases and above all the opportunity to interact with fellow collectors.

Esperanto is a language which was designed for international use. We say, designed, because unlike natural languages such as Greek, Latin and English, it did not evolve over centuries. Instead it is a planned language with a founder.

Esperanto was developed by L L Zamenhof, a Jewish doctor. Growing up in Warsaw, a multilingual society, Zamenhof became convinced that most international problems of his day would be resolved if only men had a common language. He saw how racial and cultural differences were amplified by the use of different languages amongst people. Different languages hindered interaction and communication between people, giving rise to ignorance, suspicion and eventual conflict.

Zamenhof sought to develop a simple language which could be learned easily and which could be used internationally. Since, the language would not be connected to any region, country or people, everyone could identify with it. Zamenhof began working on it when he was just a junior in high school. He was finally ready to unveil his new language to the world when he was just 27 in the year 1887.

The language gained popularity with a relatively small time. Numerous periodicals were started to popularize the language. The First congress of Esperanto speakers was held in 1905 in France. These conferences are conducted annually. The conference for 2008 was conducted in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

While it has not become the international language, its founder imagined, the language has been in continuous use for over a century. Though no country has adopted the language for official use, there are about one thousand native speakers of the language. Besides, about two million people are believed to be fluent in the language. Esperanto is also widely used in correspondence, radio and TV shows and in conventions.

There are 28 letters in Esperanto. The letters are mostly derived from the Latin alphabet. They are

a b c ĉ d e f g ĝ h ĥ i j ĵ k l m n o p r s ŝ t u ŭ v z

Some common expressions in Esperanto are

The Dugong is an aquatic mammal that lives in the sea, usually in shallow areas such as channels, bays, etc. Dugongs can be found in many regions around the world. The largest population of about 85,000 can be found in Australia.

The Scientific name for the Dugong is Dugong dugon. Dugongs belong to the family Sirenia. This family of aquatic mammals also includes the manatee and the Stellar Sea Cow which was hunted to extinction in the 18th Century.

Dugongs can grow to nearly 11 feet in length and an adult dugong may weigh nearly 400 kilograms. The Females are usually larger than the males. Dugongs feed on sea grass which grows on the seabed. Because of this, they are sometimes referred to as “sea cows”. The forelimbs of the dugongs are shaped like paddles. The dugong does not have hind limbs. Instead, it has a dolphin-like tail which helps the dugong in moving forward. Using these paddle-shaped front limbs, the dugongs moves along the seabed in search of sea grass.

Dugongs are solitary animals and are usually seen alone. Sometimes, a mother can be seen with her calf. Calves are born after a pregnancy that lasts for 12 to 14 months. The bond between the mother and her calf is extremely strong. Calves stay with their mothers for many years before moving out on their own. Male Dugongs start to grow tusks between 12-15 years of age.

However today, these gentle creatures are threatened by destruction of their habitat, hunting and pollution. In many areas, hunting has greatly reduced the dugong population. The dugong is protected by laws in many countries. Dugongs have few natural enemies such as sharks, crocodiles and killer whales. They have been known to live upto 70 years in stable protected environments.

Composed mainly of Vikings, who served as mercenaries in the Byzantine military, the guard was noted for its loyalty to the Emperor and its perceived aloofness from the political intrigues of the palace. Lacking confidence in his native Byzantine guards whose loyalty he did not fully trust, the Emperor Basil II raised the Varangian Guard to serve as his bodyguards.

The word Varangian is said to have originated from the word ‘var’ which could mean an oath or a pledge, a reference to the guards as warriors who promise to protect. Besides their function as bodyguards of the emperor, the Varangians were also charged with other duties such as the investigation of treason and conspiracies. As bodyguards, they accompanied the emperor during his public appearances and also performed a ceremonial role. The Guard was initially, composed mostly of Scandinavians. However, after the Norman invasion of Britain, Anglo-Saxons were inducted too.

Apart from their primary role as protectors of the Emperor, the Varangian Guard was also deployed in critical battles where the Varangians were known for their ferocity and ruthlessness. The weapon of choice for the Varangians was a long axe. They also appear to have been skilled as swordsmen and archers. Their loyalty coupled with their martial prowess made them an elite body of troops who were both feared and respected.

Since their chief role was in defending the person of the Emperor, the Varangians were stationed around Constantinople. During the Sacking of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, they were the only unit in the Byzantine to offer any significant resistance to the pillaging crusaders. The Guard was disbanded shortly the city was captured in 1204.

She achieved fame and acclaim as the first women to make a solo flight across the Atlantic. She made many other achievements in the field of aviation.Earhart’s distinguished career was tragically cut short when she mysteriously disappeared while attempting to make a flight around the globe. Her remarkable story and her legacy in the field of aviation endure to this day.

Amelia was born in 1897 in Kansas, USA. Drawn to flying from a young age, she saved money and took flying lessons, determined to live out her love for aviation. She soon managed to buy an airplane and in the following years made many achievements in aviation, including the first solo transcontinental flight and won recognition by performing many aviation feats.

In 1932, Earhart became the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic, five years after Charles Lindbergh made the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Starting from Newfoundland, she flew across and landed in Londonderry, Ireland.
Three years later in 1935, she scaled another height when she became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to California.

In the United States, Earhart soon became an icon. She was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the Congress of the United States and received many other awards. Earhart also made great effort to popularize aviation. She was amongst the first people who tried to develop commercial aviation. The first flight service between New York and Washington DC was set up, thanks in part to her efforts and investment. She also went on to hold important positions in the fledgling airline industry.

In 1936, Earhart made plans for a flight around the world. She chose to circle the globe along the longest path – along the equator with a navigator, Fred Noonan. Her first attempt had to be abandoned due to technical problems. She started again a few months later from Miami. She arrived at Lae, New Guinea on 29th June 1937, having covered over 22,000 miles. She, now, had to cover the remaining 7,000 miles over the Pacific.

The next day, Earhart took off from Lae. Her planned landing was to be at Howland Island, a small island just a few miles long. The US Coast Guard vessel, the USGSC Itasca was stationed to coordinate the landing. Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan were able to make radio contact with the USGSC Itasca. Soon, communication with the aircraft was lost. What happened next remains unclear. The Coast Guard vessel initially received messages from Earhart’s plane. But, the aircraft was unable to receive messages sent from the ship.

Suddenly, all contact with the plane was lost. Desperate attempts were made by radio operators across the pacific to contact Earhart, but, in vain. The US Navy made an exhaustive search and rescue operation in the Pacific to rescue her. However, no trace of the plane and its pilot could be found.

The life of a brave young woman had come to a tragic end. Over the years, many theories would emerge about Earhart and her disappearance. Some claimed that Earhart managed to land her plane on a remote, uninhabited island but died shortly afterwards. Other claimed that she was taken prisoner by the Japanese, an enemy of the United States during the time, and was executed along with her navigator, Noonan.

However, no conclusion could be reached on what happened to Amelia Earhart. Amelia Earhart was a pioneering woman who achieved remarkable things in her life and made contribution to the field of aviation. She was seen as a symbol of women’s achievement. Her accomplishments were admirable, given the time she lived in. She remains an inspiration through her achievement and her career.

It was founded in 1961 by a British lawyer called Peter Benenson. Benenson was moved by a case of two Portuguese students who had been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment during the Spanish Civil War. The incident motivated him to start a movement that would highlight such human rights violation and campaign against injustice. Amnesty International was thus born.

Today, the organization is a global movement which campaigns for human rights. It has campaigned on a wide of human rights issues such as people jailed for their political views, violence against women, torture and arms control.

The organization is present in about 150 countries around the world and has about 1.8 million members. The organization adopts many methods of campaigning to get its message across to the public, politicians and decision makers. Public demonstrations, writing letters to leaders and conducting awareness campaigns are some of the methods used by Amnesty International in its campaigns.

Another method which Amnesty International uses is the mobilization of volunteer activists – people who volunteer to work for Amnesty International. Volunteers help in creating awareness about violations amongst the general public. In addition, the organization works with lawyers, journalists and people who can influence public and government opinion. They also work with the governments of various countries to bring change in government policy and to get political prisoners released.

Amnesty International is campaigning against the death penalty, which it says, is a cruel and degrading form of punishment. It has advocated the cause of refugees who are displaced from their home due to war or natural calamities. Besides, it is currently campaigning against child soldiers – the hundreds of children who are forced to join terrorist organizations and other armed groups.

The organization does not accept money or other help from any government. It raises money from its members and supporters. Amnesty International is governed by an International council consisting of representatives from all the countries where it has a presence.

Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1977, in recognition of its efforts in the cause of human rights.

Glaciers are one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring natural features on earth. Glaciers are large and massive features of ice which can be found on the polar regions and at high altitudes on other places on the earth. Vast areas of the polar regions are permanently covered by glaciers. Glaciers cover approximately 10% of the earth’s surface, chiefly, on the poles and hold upto 75% of the earth’s freshwater.

Glaciers are formed when layers of snow get compacted over time due to gravity. The compaction takes place over many years. The snow in the lower layers gets pressed down by the weight of the snow above and compaction occurs. The snow thus gets converted into ice due to pressure – a process known as glaciation. As snow falls further, the snow on the top too gets compacted and the glacier increases in size.

Glaciers can be broadly categorized into alpine glaciers and continental glaciers. Alpines glaciers are found at high altitudes such as mountains from where they also spreadout to the plains. Continental Glaciers, on the other hand, cover huge areas and are principally found in the poles. They are also known as ice sheets. These kinds of large glaciers that cover the land can be found in the poles.

Alpine Glaciers can be found high mountainous regions. In such high altitudes, the temperature remains cold throughout the year which prevents the snow from melting. The snow which accumulates forms the glacier. Glaciers such as the one on Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa belong to this type.

Valley Glaciers are formed when snow accumulated in the mountains forms a glacier and then slides down a valley. Tidewater Glaciers are formed when glaciers slide into the ocean. Big chunks of the glaciers “calve” or fall into the ocean. Tidewater Glaciers are usually found near the poles

Another type of Glacier is the Piedmont glacier which is formed when a glacier slides down from a mountain and spreads over a plain, occupying a wide area.

Glaciers are indeed spectacular features of natures. Their sheer size and scenic beauty is inspiring to see. However, the influence over the land is phenomenal. Over the centuries, glaciers can change the landscape by eroding materials as they slide over the land and depositing the material elsewhere. The breathtaking fjords of Norway are and example of glacial action.

However, today, the Glaciers are threatened by Global warming – the rise in temperatures around the world due to the increased emission of greenhouse gases. Scientists tell us that the increasing temperatures are causing the glaciers to melt at a faster rate causing the glaciers to “recede”. The melting of the glaciers, especially at the poles, may cause an increase in sea levels

A book by Alexandre Dumas – the noted French novelist, The Three Musketeers has all the ingredients of a great novel. The novel was first published in 1844 in the magazine in a serial form. It was instantly popular.

Set in the days of pre-revolutionary France, the novel revolves around a young man D’Artagnan and his obsession with joining the Musketeers, an elite guard that protects the French King. D’Artagnan reaches Paris from his native province of Gascony with a letter of introduction from his late father. However, due to an unfortunate series of circumstances, he loses the letter of introduction. He manages to meet the three of the musketeers, Athos, Pothos and Aramis; the three are also close friends who live by the novel’s famous motto “One for all and All for one.” Without his letter, though, D’Artagnan is received coldly by the Musketeers who look at him as just another young man with adventurous ideas.

The Musketeers are opposed by Richelieu, the power hungry and Machiavellian cardinal of France and the real power behind the French throne. The French King, Louis XIII, is young and inexperienced in matters of state and is easily manipulated by the wily Richelieu who constantly seeks to curtail royal power and expand his own authority. Since, the musketeers answer directly to the French King and not to him, Richelieu views them as a threat and craftily seeks to disband them and when unsuccessful, schemes to destroy them altogether.

Camaraderie, loyalty, illicit romance and political intrigue all create an atmosphere of intense suspense and anticipation. The collegiality of D’Artagnan and the Musketeers is centred around the famous slogan “One for all and All for One”.

As an increasingly assertive Louis seeks to establish his own power, the Cardinal plans to do away with him altogether and sets up an assassin to kill the king. The story dwells on how D’Artagnan and his musketeer friends protect the king, outwitting the powerful Cardinal Richelieu and his sinister spies.

Is that a sun dial on your wrist?

It might have those old school looks, but the GWM5600 G-Shock is every bit the modern timepiece.

As you might expect from a G-Shock, it offers up shock and water resistance, as well as a digital time and timers, viewable in all conditions thanks to the auto backlight. And don’t worry about setting the time – Atomic Timekeeping Technology makes this watch super-accurate, even adjusting settings for a leap year or if the clocks go backward/forward.

But that’s only half the story – the big selling point here is solar power. Yes, you can forget the batteries, this particular G-Shock works off a tiny panel, in turn feeding a large-capacity rechargeable battery, saving you money and saving the planet too, in its own small way. Expect it in the shops in the coming weeks with a choice of plastic or metal strap, priced well under the £100 mark.
